New publication

Just a quick announcement that the new issue of Forge came out today.  It includes my story “A Smooth, Clean Cut.”  If you’re interested.

I write fiction and teach college writing and literature. I'm the author of the story collection There Is No Other Way to Worship Them, the novel Hagridden, and the flash fiction chapbooks Box Cutters and Where There Is Ruin.

  1. Is that prose poetry or flash fiction? Whatever it was, I thought it was very fluid and beautifully written. I loved the samurai sword too!

    1. Smart-asses would say, What’s the difference? But in my book, this one’s flash.

Actually, this one’s a bit of a strange creature, because it’s an excerpt from my novella, except that it isn’t really an excerpt, it’s an insert. I had the idea for the story but didn’t know the characters, so I just borrowed some characters from the novella, and after a few revisions I couldn’t seem to get rid of them–they’d made a home in this story, and it felt like it belonged to them. So later I wedged it into the novella just to see how it played there. I like it both ways, so now I get to claim it’s an excerpt even though it was never part of the novella to begin with.

And thanks for the comment! I’ve always been pretty fond of this story, so it’s nice to see it get a little love from others, too. (And I dig the sword, too. Always had a thing for samurai.)
