New publication

Prick of the Spindle cover1Continuing in the awesomeness of March = Sam’s fiction, I have a new story out today. This time it’s in the very excellent Prick of the Spindle, which I’ve been hankering to get into for quite some time now.

The story, “All That Is Given Will Return,” is about scavengers and marijuana dealers and giant tortoises in southeast Texas. That’s right. Giant tortoises. Named Clive. I’m pretty sure you’re going to love this one.

(And bonus points to anyone who can figure out which author/story I’m paying homage to with this one! Except for Ryan Werner, who already knows because he workshopped this one with me.)

So, huge thanks to Prick of the Spindle and editor Cynthia Reeser, who is awesome and a pleasure to correspond with. And happy reading, gang.

I write fiction and teach college writing and literature. I'm the author of the story collection There Is No Other Way to Worship Them, the novel Hagridden, and the flash fiction chapbooks Box Cutters and Where There Is Ruin.

      1. Sam, this was possibly the best short story I have read in a long time. I never knew where it was going to lead, and that’s a top-drawer thing! I love these sentences…

“The pickup is a massive dual king cab—white that goes yellow with pollen when wind blows in from the wrong direction.”

“Her name is Tiffany, honest to god.”

        … simply because I do.

I’m alerting some friends to this.

      2. Wow! Thanks! I have to tell you, I worked long and hard on this one — it was a difficult one to nail down. I don’t think I would have pulled it off without the editing advice from my pal Ryan Werner and the PotS editor Cynthia Reeser. But yeah, I’m pretty proud of the final result. So thanks so much for the feedback! =D
