I am a writing teacher and a fiction author, though not always in that order. I have a chapbook forthcoming from Sunnyoutside Press, and I have a novel and a story collection on the market. I am a recipient of a 2013 Oregon Literary Fellowship. I have been shortlisted in the Faulkner-Wisdom competition, twice for short fiction and once for my novella; I also have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and a storySouth Million Writers Award. I teach writing courses for Pacific Northwest College of Art and Chemeketa Community College, and I serve as production editor for Jersey Devil Press and as prose editor for Unshod Quills. I’m also a dedicated coffee addict and collector of smiley faces.
I was born in Oklahoma but raised mostly in Texas; I’ve also lived in Oregon and Wisconsin, and I love to travel: in addition to driving much of the US, I’ve visited Mexico, Turkey, Canada, Scotland, Austria, The Netherlands, and Thailand. I recently spent two years living in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. I currently live in Portland, Oregon, with my wife and our two cats, Ibsen and Brontë.
