"Pillar." Platteville, Wisconsin, 27 January 2007.

Note: I don’t know what atmospheric conditions created this “spotlight” effect during the sunset, but if anyone could explain it to me, I’d love to know.  I find it fascinating.

  1. I think it’s a solar pillar formed by sunlight and ice crystals. However, looks more like a touch of the divine to me!

    1. That makes sense! I’d never seen one before, having lived so long in Texas. Why it still took three winters in Wisconsin to finally notice one I don’t really know, and actually, I never saw one again, so I think I’ll run with your “divine” suggestion. Either way, I loved it.

      Thanks for the comment!

      * UPDATE: I Googled your term, “solar pillar,” and now I feel like an idiot for never having known about them! Seriously, must come from living so long in the South. And despite the first few hits insisting these things are “rare,” I sure found a plethora of photos in the Image Search. But at least I got to see my own, so I’m happy to add my photo to the list. 🙂
